Marshall Adult Education has created Reading Skills Stories,  an excellent resource of original short stories with expository text (and audio support) that cover many different topics, including life skills.

Their stories are divided into various levels of fluency.

I’ve placed links to their two sites in the Favorite Sites section of my English Themes For Beginners and Early Intermediate page.
