I’ve certainly been reading a lot about the effect the economy has and will have on school budgets, including this excellent piece from Robert Reich called Of Financial Capital and Human Capital: Why We’re Bailing Out Wall Street While Allowing Our Schools to Get Clobbered.

What I haven’t seen, though, is just about anything on how the increasing economic pressure, loss of jobs, and subsequent increasing family tension is affecting student lives and their classroom learning.

In our inner-city school, at least, it’s pretty clear that more and more students are distracted and disturbed because of the affects of the economic meltdown.  That, combined with the fact that the holidays are coming-up and that means that they will not be at school for two weeks, and that school is a major stabilizing forces in their lives,  quite a few are having some difficult times.
