I am doing an afterschool program about the publishing process. I love all the great ideas you put together! Students can also write into children's magazines like CRICKET and SPIDER. They have contests every month. We have had students get poetry and are art work published in the magazine.

Nice list -

I have been thinking Goodreads.com would be a good way to have some authentic book reviews and teach a little social networking. Is there a reason you didn't include it next to Shelfari? Should I change my social networking tool? :)

Thanks for the great resource,

Hi Larry,
Thanks for this comprehensive list and the exciting possibilities it brings with it.
My students write in Hebrew or in basic ESL but I'm sure I will be able to adapt many of the ideas.
Thanks for sharing!

Larry,
This is a terrific list. I need to spend some time going through it. This is all new to me. I am a student in a course at the University of South Alabama. I was certified to teach secondary English years ago and am re-certifying. Needless to say, writing opportunities have drastically changed. What about checking writing as students post. Is your goal simply to get them writing, or do you have some way to look over the published product? I would like to know.

Check with your library to see if they allow you to post reviews in the library catalog. The system (Destiny) we use allows students to write and post reviews on books in the catalog. The reviews need to be approved before they are posted.

This is an awesome list! Thanks for sharing it with us.

I will add one...futureme.org. Students can write a letter to themselves and it will be sent to them in the future on a date they designate when they write the letter. Great for setting goals at the beginning of the school year and getting a reality check in January.

Great sites Larry. I was writing my lesson plans for this upcoming semester and came across a site called http://www.thefreeresource.com which seems to also be good for students and teachers. Since finding it I have used it in my classroom on a few occasions to help teach my students about some of the topics it covers. They give trusted information within their articles about many topics and then additional education and government resources for more reading. They also seem to be searching for teachers and professional writers to help them gather trusted resources and write articles. Anyway Larry, I just wanted to give more input in addition to what Debra and the other community members have said.

I also just found this site -- http://www.madglibs.com/
Students can create and post their own mad lib. This is good practice for knowing parts of speech.
