This year I'm having my 8th graders do two projects the last 12 days of school. Six days to research and about six days to present those projects. One project is to cover the three chapters we just covered ( they are quite use to this) and the other is an inquiry project. They will answer the question: What does it mean to be an American? I'm encouraging my students to tell me about their lives in America, the positive as well as the negative. Tell me about the pressures and stressors in their lives ( I teach in an high poverty urban system).

I have a "passion project" planned. Our school goal is social responsibility and I would like students to find a issue that needs addressing, in our class/school/community. They would have time throughout the week to follow through on this project and use the resources available at school. A few students, for example, would like to extend our school's "Project Love" fundraiser and raise funds for classroom material to African schools. It could also be a simple as learning to knit/ sew and create blankets for our homeless. The energy is contagious when we a have many projects working simultaneously. We have debriefing, sharing of ideas and brainstorming sessions. Great learning experience.

This was my 3rd year teaching 6th grade Social Studies. Our last quarter was devoted to learning about Canada and the United States - history, geography, cultures. I checked out about 40 books from our school library, the local public library and our Area Education Agency and had the students read one of the books during the last week of school during class and then write a short book report and give it orally to the class. Great way for them to stay within the SS mindset and use their time wisely.

Suggestions are great. I think we need more teacher survival tactics. I have a lot of hands on projects and set aside a day -two or three weeks before end of school - to have a feedback session. The question – “What would you change in this class if you were teaching it next year.” Some great ideas come out and I let the students work on some of the improvements- such as sample projects. Helps my summer to think I’m ahead for next year. Thanks -- Jim

Thanks for this post! I have had some different ideas of what to do with my students in this last month--mini units, lots of hands-on, discussion, etc.--but I didn't even think about what I personally should do to survive!

I try to save the last couple of weeks of the semester for more creative projects - oral presentations, personal narrative and fiction writing - that incorporate ideas we've looked at during the semester. This week and next, we're "workshopping" personal writing: students bring in a first draft of a creative piece they need to submit at the end; they do a "self-evaluation" worksheet and a "peer evaluation" worksheet, and submit it all to me for feedback before they do their final version. Working on their own writing to apply the literary concepts we've discussed seems to energize them.
