Copyright And Fair Use: Guidelines For Teachers is a very simple, and very good, one page PDF document.
I’m adding it to The Best Resources To Learn About Copyright Issues.
Thanks to patpack on Twitter for the tip.

Larry, the only potential pitfall to this chart is that it is based only on U.S. copyright laws. So if someone Googled “sunset picture” that is owned by someone in France their copyright laws… which differ from ours.
I also meant to add that this small detail gets often lost on teachers and, most definitely, students.
Most of those charts will keep you safe, but I moving towards assert Fair Use and learning more about that since the guidelines are at best, arbitrary, and involve a lot of input from groups representing copyright holders sometimes seeking to maximize their interests, and downplay fair use rights that we and especially educators have. I prefer the work from the copyrightconfusion wiki which comes out of work from American University and the Temple University Media Lab. I’ve written about it before, but Gail Desler’s post from NECC is more up to date, so I’ll point people there.
