In mid-May, our school will be having an “ethnic studies week,” with most classes having lessons on a different ethnic group represented in our school each. It will culminate in a Diversity Assembly that Friday.

My colleague Katie Hull and I, instead of creating lessons for that week, are having our mainstream ninth-grade classes create their own lessons using the teaching strategies that we’ve used all year. Small groups will teach their lessons.

It should go pretty well, and it should be a nice activity to prepare in the midst of state testing over the next couple of weeks.

You can find all the student instructions for the project at the Ethnic Studies post at our ninth-grade English class blog.

It would be very doable in our Intermediate English classes, too, but I just don’t think I have it in me to do it there, too, right now.
