Challenge.gov Could Be A Useful Site For Teachers

Challenge.gov posts government-sponsored “contests” for adults and kids that are designed to elicit ideas on how to solve various problems.

Here are a few examples from the site:

Make a “How Do I Become President” infographic for distribution to schools around the U.S.

Write about how you’ve used government information in your life and have your story posted on GovGab

Educators are asked to identify and solve education’s most pressing classroom problems.

Teachers might find some decent projects for students to do….

“Dropping Knowledge”

Dropping Knowledge is a site where users can both pose and answer “deep” questions (Why do we lie to ourselves? Are women better human beings than men?)

It seems to be very heavily moderated for inappropriate content.

I could see it be a useful site for both ELL’s and my IB Theory of Knowledge students.

I’m adding it to The Best Places Where Students Can Write For An “Authentic Audience”.

Thanks to The Make Use of blog for the tip.

Minor Edublogs Problem

All blogs hosted by Edublogs, including this one, were off-line for a short time today. But everything is back to normal now.

Just a minor hiccup in what I still consider to be the best blog hosting platform on the planet…

The Gracelessness Of Michelle Rhee

The arrogance of Michelle Rhee is well-known — allowing herself to be pictured on the cover of TIME Magazine with a broom in school is just the most well-known example.

One would have thought it would be difficult to top that, but she did last night after her boss, Washington, D.C. Mayor Fenty, lost the election (she is expected to leave her job as Superintendent of Schools shortly as well). She said:

“Let me not mince words, and say that yesterday’s election results were devastating – devastating. Not for me, because I’ll be fine. And not even for Fenty, because he’ll be fine, too. It was devastating for the children of Washington, D.C.”

Messianic complexes are not what schools, nor any public institution need. Memo to Ms. Rhee: No one is indispensable in any organization anywhere….

Just as many of the changes initiated by Ms. Rhee’s predecessors have been given the credit for many of today’s improvements in the D.C. schools, there is ample reason to believe that schools will improve under her successors.

In fact, the only negative that I can see happening as a result of yesterday’s election in D.C. is that it dramatically increases the odds of Ms. Rhee coming here to Sacramento after she marries our Mayor, Kevin Johnson, this month. Coincidence or not, he happened to announce today the formation of a Broad Foundation funded citywide education organization.

Uh oh….

“Change The Equation”

Change The Equation is a new organization (it actually launched today) that, as Claus von Zastrow (its CEO) says:

…is an outgrowth of President Obama’s Educate to Innovate campaign–It has over 100 corporate members who are joining forces to improve STEM education. The aim is to help them align their engagement and philanthropy to make a bigger difference than they can alone.

Claus’ name might be familiar to readers. I often quoted his writings when he was director of Learning First, his previous position.

Claus also has a new blog which I’ve added to my RSS reader, and I suspect many more will, too!
