Several Ways We Can Teach Social Studies More Effectively — Part One is my newest post over at Education Week Teacher. It’s the first post in a three-part series.
Three very talented educators share their responses in this post: Stephen Lazar, Bill Bigelow, and Sarah Kirby-Gonzalez.
I am a high school social studies teacher of US History (11th grade) and Contemporary World Problems (12th grade). I try to be projects based in my teaching. I think I do this well in Contemporary World Problems but NOT so well in US History. My district is implementing Common Core Standards, in addition to using Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching for our evaluations. I am the only CWP teacher at my school. However, I am one of four US history teachers. We must have a common formative assessment and a common summative assessment for each unit–yet our teaching styles are so different. I am interested in learning how to effectively embrace Common Core and the Framework for teaching while using what has been taught as Best Practices. Any ideas?
I don’t understand. Is my reply to long?
