David Deubelbeiss, the genius behind EFL Classroom 2.0 and one of the brains behind English Central, tweeted this hilarious “literal” adaptation of an old Monkees music video.
There are one or two slightly risque parts (and I mean barely risque) that probably don’t make it appropriate for a K-12 classroom, but it certainly could be used with adults, and David has supporting materials for it (David also has tons of other resources there — EFL Classroom 2.0 is THE place on the web for ESL/EFL/ELL teachers).
I’ve written about many ways to use music with ELLs, but I have to admit I never thought of this ingenious way before…
(I don’t think the video will come through on an RSS Readers, so you’ll have to click through to see it)
We are doing something a little similar with secondary students in the European funded PopuLLar project, except the students rewrite the words in other languages.

I am a big fan of literal videos. Some of my favourites are “You Spin Me Round” by Dead or Alive, “Land Down Under” by Men at Work and “Take on Me” by Ah-ha. All can be viewed on YouTube. Some are more appropriate than others but good for a laugh. Thanks for another one that I haven’t seen before 🙂
Simon,
Thanks. I went to Youtube and enjoyed them. A whole genre I never knew existed!
