What to do — and not do — for growing number of English Language Learners is the title of a guest piece that Katie Hull and I wrote and was published in The Washington Post today.

It’s a partially an excerpt from our recent book on ELL’s, and shares our advice both to teacher and to policymakers.

  1. “Don’t allow top-down consultants to parachute in and provide training that teachers have not requested or do not need. Don’t ignore teacher requests for professional development that they need to develop their practice and better support their students.”

It’s incredible that decisions of significance seem to never include teacher input. Our district now has a consulting firm that will disrupt your ELD lesson and teach you how to do things the “right way.”
