Developing Student Writers By Letting Them Talk… is my new post over at Education Week Teacher.
It’s the first post in a three-part series focusing on teaching writing in the context of the Common Core Standards.
Today’s commentaries come from educators Mary Tedrow, Ray Salazar and Tanya Baker.
I really liked the idea of putting together different posts about this topic. I agree, students do need to talk and make sure that they can have a conversation about a topic before they can write about it. I remember that all my high school English teachers did this. We would have many class discussions about the piece of literature we were working on and then we would write an essay. I feel like this really helped me to understand what was going on and I got a lot of writing ideas from this discussion. More teachers should use this method to help their students become better writers.
