The GAMES survey (it stands for Goal-oriented studying, Active studying, Meaningful and memorable studying, Explain to understand, and Self-monitor) seems to be a useful tool for students to complete and then follow-up with a class discussion.

It lists over thirty useful learning strategies, and is designed for college students. I’d do it in sections with a high school class.
