I’ve written a lot about differentiated grading for ELLs (see The Best Resources On “Differentiated Grading” For English Language Learners and our article,  Grading English Language Learners – A Perspective From Two Teachers).

Our District recently added a “canned comment” (a menu of comments that can be added to student report cards) that says, “Grade reflects accommodations made due to English proficiency level.”

Based on recent discussions I’ve had with other faculty, having that comment available will be a big help to teachers who are trying to balance meeting standards and wanting to do “right” by our ELLs who are working extremely hard in our mainstream content classes.

Good work, Sacramento City Unified School District!
