‘Start Classroom Management From a Place of Love, Not a Place of Power’ is the headline of my latest Education Week Teacher column.
In it, Anne Jenks, Peg Grafwallner, Kevin Parr, Rita Platt, Sarah Thomas, Thomas Kerman, and Paula Kondratko share their biggest classroom management mistakes and what they should have done, instead.
Here are some excerpts:
Thanks for those excerpts, Larry! This sounds like a very interesting conversation. Classroom management strategies are so varied, and what works with one group of kiddos may be the worst strategy with the next group. The thing that makes them most successful is building relationships with those kids. I can’t agree with this piece enough.
Hello Larry,
I really enjoyed reading those excerpts! I am currently working towards becoming an Early Childhood Educator and classroom management is something that I want to make sure I achieve early on as an Educator. I definitely agree that classroom management should be started from a place of love and not a place of power. I just had a Teacher tell me that one thing we must do as Educators is to make sure that the students know we care about them. She said that helps tremendously with classroom management. Thank you once again for the excerpts. I know I will find myself referring to them as I continue my path towards becoming an Educator.
