Writing Approaches in Years 3 to 13: Evidence Review is a new report from The Education Endowment Foundation that reviews lots of studies about effective writing instruction.

I don’t think any experienced teachers are going to find any big surprises in it. They found three major broader strategies – Writing Process Models (I’d summarize it as guiding students step-by-step through the writing process), Cooperative Learning (though I think the way they describe it is more like “collaborative learning” – see Collaborative Writing, Common Core, and ELLs), and programs that integrate reading and writing – as all having roughly equal positive outcomes.

I was happy to see how much the study highlighted cooperative learning (again, its more akin to collaborative learning). I haven’t seen a lot of that in previous research on teaching writing.

I’m adding this info to THE BEST REVIEWS OF WHAT RESEARCH SAYS ABOUT EFFECTIVE WRITING INSTRUCTION.
