How Did A Guy Like Me End Up Blogging In A Place Like This? is the title of a post I’ve just written for the blog In Practice. In Practice is a collective effort by a number of teachers in lower-income schools, and is being spearheaded by Alice Mercer.
The first line in my post goes:
My name is Larry Ferlazzo, and I ‘m a Luddite.
You might find it interesting. I’ll look forward to any and all feedback.
Hi Larry, I was just perusing your blog, getting ready to send you some interview questions and found this, which actually answers several I had thought to ask!
I think your blog is a great help to lots of teachers, and many people probably don’t realize how much work goes into finding something to link to every day – and not just anything to link to, but something good. And it’s all the more impressive that you generally aren’t spending much class time actually using these.
I like what you said about the key being the teacher and not the technology…and I can relate to being a luddite blogger, or something like that!
Thanks for your comment and nice words.
Just to clarify my “In Practice” post. I don’t use many of these links in my mainstream classes (but they use them daily in their computer applications classes). I use my website a couple of class periods each month for my ESL Social Studies and English classes and our other ESL classes use them for about the same time. Our after-school ESL Lab uses them each day, and the 300 students and adults to whom we provide home computers and DSL service use my site for an hour each day. Also, our Special Ed department has seven classes that use the website daily.
So, even though I’m very glad that teachers and students throughout the world find my blog and website useful, it’s certainly beneficial to my students and our school, too.
Larry
