Secret Files is an exceptional game that Intermediate English Language Learners can use to develop vocabulary and higher-order thinking skills like categorization.
In the game, falling words have to be placed in the correct file drawers, which are the categories. You can adjust the game’s level of difficulty.
I’ve placed the link on my website under Word and Video Games.
Hi Larry,
I agree this is a great idea for a game, but I find the vocabulary quite distressing. I started with level 1, and the first word was “artilleryman.” How many of our students will know that word? And further up in difficulty there are birds (“see see” was one). Will these be useful or appropriate for our students?
Wendy,
I have to admit I only played level one for a few minutes, and the words I saw seemed fine. I guess I should have spent a little more time on the site to explore it further before I posted about ti — you’re absolutely right.
