This application doesn’t have any educational value that I can think of, but it seems pretty neat to me and will come in handy when my stepdaughter is on a trip to Europe next month, not to mention it’s easy to use anytime.

TxtDrop lets you send a web-based text message — for free — to any mobile phone in the world. If you’re in the United States and want to send it within the U.S. or Canada, you go to TxtDrop.com.

If you want to send one worldwide, you need to use TxtDrop.net.

It seems to work pretty well for me — Is this a great service, or am I missing something?

(One thing that was pointed out to me by reader Lee Barger is that your text message might bring along some not particularly appropriate ad — so be aware and definitely don’t use it with students. Until I can find a similar service, though, I still think I’ll use it personally, and no “bad” ads have come up yet for me — unlike for Lee)
