According to a new study, there is a simple but effective way to encourage kids to want to learn on their own: give them a choice. In an experiment, high school students who were allowed to choose their homework assignments (covering the same material) reported more interest, enjoyment, and competence regarding their homework, and they scored higher on a subsequent test of the material.
Makes sense to me.
I’m adding this post to The Best Resources For Learning About Homework Issues.
Larry-
I’m having my students do homework journals this year. Basically it is a place for them to record homework they do outside of class. Thus far, they have the option to read or work on a couple of vocabulary activities.
I’ve tried this before, but I didn’t do a very good job of sticking with it. This year I’ve been trying very hard to keep going on this, and I think, based on what I heard during parent/teacher conferences, that it’s going well.
Best,
Nancy
Homework and assigning it is said to be a generational thing.
I’d like to introduce another perspective: http://technologyinclass.com/blog/2010/10/01/homework-is-overrated/
