LearnZillion has tons of free video math lessons that end with a quiz. Those in themselves are not that big of a deal, but three nice things about them are that they are designed by teachers, are free, and that teachers can create “virtual” classes and monitor student progress on them.
As a non-math teacher and as someone who detests anything to do with math, I cannot vouch for the quality of these lessons. However, I’m still adding it to The Best MATH Sites That Students Can Use Independently And Let Teachers Check On Progress.
I heard about LearnZillion on NPR’s Market Watch program, and you can read/hear it here.
Larry: I am sorry to read that you detest math. As I am sure you know, you are not alone; many people whom I highly respect both professionally and personally say the same thing. I truly believe this is because of the way society defines math, and how math is taught. It is like if history were taught by only memorizing dates of wars – totally boring, uninteresting, dry.
if you have not already done so, you may want to read the first 2 or 3 pages of a piece by Paul Lockhart entitled “A Mathematician’s Lament” (http://www.maa.org/devlin/LockhartsLament.pdf). It begins with asking “what if” music were taught the way math is, and makes the argument that math is art, math is patterns of ideas, math is not what is commonly taught in schools. Worth the read!
Thanks, Jeff, I’ll take a look!
