In an awful ruling for teachers, students and their families, a California court “struck down teacher tenure and seniority protections embedded in California law.”

A decade ago, I would have welcomed a decision such as this because, as an Indiana teacher, I believed that eliminating the protectionist structure of the public schools would lead to innovation and better teaching. Going on four years since the end of tenure as we knew it: the bad teachers are still at my school, everyone’s wages have been stagnant, and test scores all hover in and around the same as they always have. Meanwhile, the amount of time we spend discussing teaching, kids, and the ways they actually learn has evaporated in favor of discussions about data, data, and oh yes! Data.
