I am a 2nd grade teacher that has been exploring the makerspace movement the past couple of years. My students have had the opportunity to be active participants and creators in their learning by using simple materials provided for them-anything from legos to cardboard. Last fall, I was fortunate to receive a grant, and a 3D Makerbot became the newest addition to our maker movement. The increased potential for student learning and engagement was phenomenal.
We have printed out 3D models that concurred with our units of study – For our American Indian Unit we printed out tipis, and longhouses. The students created an ornament to celebrate a Joy holiday. The 3D printer has given students another way to see “making” their creations/ideas come to fruition. Other teachers shared tinkercad as the platform for elementary students to create designs to print out. The 3D Printers are a perfect fit in the classroom and maker movement.
