In my Geography class for English Language Learners, every year I do a lesson where we first learn about land forms and different bodies of water. Then, students create their own world – with their own names – and making sure that they accurately use map symbols and designs showing that their world has all of those land forms and bodies of water.

Next, they complete this sheet, where they have to define each of the land forms and bodies of water and say what their names are in “their world.”

Then, they practice saying what they wrote on the sheet, which acts as a sort of checklist, to other students.

Finally, we take a photo of their world, and record their describing it, which we post on our class blog.

Here’s an example

Let me know how you think I can make this a better lesson!
