Q-Files is a new-to-me free online illustrated encyclopedia with very accessible text and images.
It seems quite extensive.
I primarily use these kinds of sites in my ELL Geography classes when students are doing research on countries and/or states. Q-Files information on countries would be very useful, which I why I’m adding it to The Best Reference Websites For English Language Learners, under “World Facts.”
Unfortunately, it doesn’t have much info about states.
Thanks to Topmarks for the tip.
Hi Larry,
Nicholas Harris from Q-files here.
First of all, thanks for the great review! I read your comment about Q-files not having much on the individual states. I’m pleased to tell you that we’ve just started to add full pages on each state — including details about geography, history, name, climate, economy etc. — to the site. You’ll find the first four in the Q-files.com/Geography > States of the US section. We should be there with all 50, plus D.C., by December.
You’ll also see that we’ve adopted American spellings throughout the site. Although I guess it’s difficult to completely conceal our British origins …
All best wishes,
Nicholas
