CommonLit has been on The Best Places To Get The “Same” Text Written For Different “Levels” for awhile. It was a neat site that didn’t actually provide the “same” text written for different “levels.” What it did do, however, is provide leveled readings – with prompts — on the same theme. It was pretty neat.

This past week, however, it advanced to a new level – it now provides teachers the ability to create free virtual classrooms and monitor student progress.

There are many sites that provide this kind of free feature (see The Best Sites That Students Can Use Independently And Let Teachers Check On Progress). However, CommonLit stands-out in some important ways.

One, it seems to me that the texts appear to be more carefully selected than in many other sites. In fact, they are grouped in themes that are clearly geared towards higher-order thinking. Also, in addition to the run-of-the-mill basic comprehension questions that all these sites offer, Common Lit also distinguishes itself with open-ended prompts that, again, require more higher-order-thinking. Teachers can easily read and respond to them.

I think a lot of teachers are going to find CommonLit useful.

Here’s a video from them providing more details:
