Starfall, as most teachers know, is a wonderful site for native-English children just learning to read and for Beginning English Language Learners.
I assume there are similar sites for Spanish-speaking kids, but I don’t know about them. I’m hoping readers might help me out.
Plenty of research documents the importance a student’s home language in learning English (The Best Resources Explaining Why We Need To Support The Home Language Of ELLs).
When we get students who are not literate in Spanish, we do get peer tutors to help them learn their language. But it sure would be nice if they could receive some additional online support.
Suggestions?
Hi Larry,
Good question. I’d like to know the answer too. I plan on having all Gif Lingua books translated into Spanish but that won’t happen so fast. Probably be done by October. I’ve just begun reaching out to Spanish teachers to help copying English books and translated. I’ll keep you posted. Here’s one example. https://book.giflingua.com/book/1375-vamos-a-aprender-los-colores/
One helpful place to go might be Storyplace. Their main URL is: https://www.storyplace.org/front and you can click a button at upper right to go to their Spanish site, or go their directly at: https://www.storyplace.org/es
For each online story in the collection, there is also an online activity and an instruction sheet for a craft or other “take home activity.” Though not nearly as comprehensive as Starfall, it could at least be a part of a larger collection of links.
Hi there,
Check out Epic! Epic! is a free, online library for teachers. The books are fantastic and are available in Spanish, English and Chinese (minimally). This is a fantastic classroom resource. There are a variety of books for children to read as well as book read aloud. So cool!
