I have students who have names using the ñ i but it isn’t used in the district system. Or a student who is Cambodian and Vietnamese but instead of being called his real name, students start calling him Chino because they thought he was Chinese. He told me his name was Chino but when I pushed it, he gave me the pronunciation of his real name. I call him by his real name and have asked other teachers to do so.
More importantly teachers need to reflect their feelings about names that don’t reflect their culture.
