I doubt that there is a better article on the benefits of reading than this new NBC News piece, Why ‘getting lost in a book’ is so good for you, according to science.

It provides an excellent summary of research, most of which you can read more at length at “Best” Lists Of The Week: Resources For Reading Instruction.

But the NBC News piece brings it all together in a very accessible way.

I plan on having students read it and then respond to this writing prompt:

What are at least three benefits to reading discussed by the author of “Why ‘Getting Lost In A Book’ Is So Good For You, According To Science.” Do you agree with her? To support your opinion you may use examples from your own experiences, your observations of others, and anything you have read, including the NBC News article.
