Here’s a comment about the video from Ted Appel, the former principal at our school who is one of the most thoughtful people about education issues who I know:
Very good. I learned a couple of good things. I think the focus on knowing what you are trying to accomplish through any learning activity is key. This is much tougher for teachers than you’d expect, particularly since they are not creating or choosing curriculum to support a particular objective in many cases. More often they are implementing proscribed activities and are never clear on what it is the activity is designed to help a student learn or get better at. Pretty tough to differentiate when the belief is the activity product is the actual goal.
