New research has come up with I think are pretty decent guidelines for how to construct multiple choice questions.

For better multiple-choice tests, avoid tricky questions, study finds is a Science Daily summary of the study and, for a change, the summary does a good job of sharing the key research conclusions, including suggested guidelines.

I know some educators are not big fans of multiple-choice tests, but I believe they have a place (and also have to be kept in their place).
