Having students highlight text has gotten a “bad rap” from some past researchers who have missed the point of them being effective tools for student engagement (see The “Best Learning Techniques” Are Useless If Students Won’t Do Them — A Critical Take On A Well Done Study and It Doesn’t Matter If It’s “Effective” If Students Won’t Do It).

Today, though, I learned through From Experience To Meaning about a review of studies showing when and how some researchers have found it to be an effective learning strategy.

I still strongly believe that in the real world of the classroom it’s an effective engagement tool, but reviewing some of the recommendations made in that post can’t hurt…
