An article today in The Harvard Business Review reported on new research identifying the conditions employees identified that helped them reach what they identified as their “full potential.”

My understanding is that researchers in general tend to be a bit wary of self-reported findings, but their results do make sense to me and, I think, can be easily applied to the classroom.

The conditions include:

  • there are clear expectations
  • people feel safe asking questions
  • there is flexibility in how tasks are accomplished
  • people are asked for feedback about how things are done
  • their feelings are acknowledged and understood
  • there is a sense of belonging

These seem to be the kind of conditions most good teachers try to create in their classrooms.
