In abrupt turnaround, California to let school districts decide how to enforce mask rules is from The L.A. Times. As the article explains, the state originally said – smartly – that students without masks could not attend school. They did that to reduce attacks on local district from anti-masker parents. But, then, within hours, they blew it and reversed that decision. Ugh.

California directs districts to offer remote independent study this fall is from Ed Source. This is the right call. However, for districts who had put their heads in the sand and hadn’t already been preparing for this eventuality, it’s going to be a hectic few weeks as they try to figure out a remote learning option that isn’t just slapped together.

‘Don’t go back to the old normal’: Opportunities for Adolescent Learning Revealed by COVID-19 is from MindShift. I’m adding it to A BEGINNING LIST OF RESOURCES ON SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS AS WE MAKE BABY STEPS TOWARDS RETURNING TO A POST-PANDEMIC CLASSROOM.

Put Students, Not Screens, at the Center of Post-Pandemic Learning is from Education Next. I’m adding it to the same list.

The post-COVID stickiness of hybrid school is from Axios and, for what it’s worth, includes a quote from me.

Schools Get a Stimulus Windfall, but Find That It May Not Be Enough is from The NY Times.

I’m adding this tweet to Trying To Bring Research, Sanity, Teacher Expertise & Student Voice To The “Learning Loss” Discussion:

As the C.D.C. relaxes guidelines for schools, New York City and California are sticking with their mask rules. is from The NY Times.
