Nikole Hannah-Jones has been doing an amazing job dealing with all the attacks on her work, and the attacks on us teachers who feel we should teach about the evils of systemic racism.
Here are some tweets she sent out today. I’m adding this post to WE SHOULD ENCOURAGE PARENT ENGAGEMENT, BUT NOT PARENT BULLYING.
No one is fooled by what you all mean when you say “parents should decide.” In fact, you seem just fine with the state deciding as long as the state is banning texts you don’t like. Do parents in states banning CRT and 1619 get to decide what is taught? Help me understand.

I’ll ask you the same thing I just tweeted. Which parents get to decide what is taught? How do parents, as opposed to educational professionals, get to choose what is taught and what isn’t? Because plenty of parents in Texas want 1619 Project and texts about gay children taught. https://t.co/LLOz3QNzTp

The question these people can never, ever answer is WHICH parents? Because no one seems concerned at all about what Black, Indigenous, LGBTQ parents want taught. Trust, if I as a parent get to decide, these people would not be happy. For them, the white/conservative is silent. pic.twitter.com/0oOEvQRsCX

James Baldwin was not a professional educator so we should not teach his work in schools. Yes, a compelling argument! 🤦🏽♀️ https://t.co/4nZLVxfP0h

This is just too easy. The desperation of disliking me so much that it forces you to argue that you don’t want your children to be taught by people with subject-matter expertise. https://t.co/RAwLIX84lJ

Todd: "Parents are saying 'hey don't make my kid feel guilty." And a parent of color is going…'I need to teach reality.'"
Hannah-Jones: "You should just think a little bit about your framing. You said 'parents.' And then you said 'parents of color.' So the 'white' is silent." pic.twitter.com/D0RA7HzQDn

Trying to understand where all the "parents should decide what their children learn in school" folks are here. Does that include parents who want CRT, anti-racism, 1619 Project, accurate historical texts taught, too, or nah? Or, are we fine with the govt deciding after all? https://t.co/UJkfpnZ9Fz
