Earlier this week, I shared the first day’s highlights from the month-long online discussion of our new book (see THE MONTH-LONG #MLLCHAT_BKCLUB CHAT ON OUR BOOK BEGINS TODAY – IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN!).
Here are more of the tweets from this week – and it’s not too late to join:
It's so important for students to know that it's "perfectly fine" if they don't understand or are still unsure of the lesson but that you as a teacher need to know so you can make adjustments to the lesson. #MLLChat_BkClub #ESLsg #checkforunderstanding @Larryferlazzo @KHullSyp pic.twitter.com/SUKxoNcc3I

One of the best ways I've found to encourage Gen Ed teachers to adopt ELL teaching practices is to have students help lead professional development sessions where they share how helpful they've been. Here are some examples: https://t.co/QutD09uSjR #MLLChat_BkClub

Working in pairs = more “miles on the tongue.” In what ways do YOU use intentional grouping to maximize learning? #ESLsg @Larryferlazzo @KHullSyp #MLLChat_BkClub 6.0 #ESL #ELL #MLL https://t.co/SYtqOl42vZ

Our beginner #MLLs/#EmergentBilinguals may not have mastered the #AcademicLanguage they need YET, but they bring so many assets & qualities to the classroom that aren’t always visible on the surface. #MLLChat_BkClub 6.0 #ESLsg @Larryferlazzo @KHullSyp #ELL #ELL #AssetsBased pic.twitter.com/hNAoWp6Q9b

#LanguageAcquisition is not linear. Speaking, Writing, Reading, & Listening develop at different rates for each student & proficiency levels may change with the task. #MLLChat_BkClub 6.0 #ESLsg @Larryferlazzo @KHullSyp #LanguageLearning #MLL #ELL #ESL pic.twitter.com/ffAGIzCSef

I think what’s most important is that content teachers understand that their ELL students may sound verbally much more English-proficient than they might be in listening, reading and writing, & they need to scaffold accordingly #MLLChat_BkClub
