The Digest of Education Statistics recently updated numbers on education in the United States.

Here is some of the new data on English Language Learners:

In 2019, ELLs comprised 10.4% of the K-12 student population, up from 10.2% the previous year.

Spanish was – by far – the home language most spoken by ELLs, followed by Arabic.  Third place was a tie between Chinese and Vietnamese.

64% of teachers had a least one ELL in their class.

Not surprisingly, the reading scores of ELLs on the NAEP test were below those who were not ELLs.
