The CDC came up with an alarming report today, detailed in The Washington Post (Teen girls ‘engulfed’ in violence and trauma, CDC finds) and in The NY Times (Teen Girls Report Record Levels of Sadness, C.D.C. Finds).

The NY Times also reported that “the findings, based on surveys given to teenagers across the country, also showed high levels of violence, depression and suicidal thoughts among lesbian, gay and bisexual youth.”

On a micro-level in my own classroom, based on weekly SEL surveys, student feelings about my class, school in general, and in their personal life is at the lowest level since I began doing them three years ago.

Fortunately, we have a strong counseling staff and a Community Schools operation, but student mental health needs are real.
