Over the past week, I did a “slow Twitter chat” about my new book, The Student Motivation Handbook.
I thought readers might find some of those tweets interesting:

We teachers can’t make students have intrinsic motivation, but we can create the classroom conditions where that kind of motivation is more likely to develop and flourish (hat tip to the late educator Ken Robinson 4 phrasing idea) #motivationhandbook pic.twitter.com/ebGh92CQL7

Plenty of research (tons of references in book) shows that intrinsic motivation tends to lead to greater academic achievement and a better sense of well-being, lasts longer, enhances creativity, and cultivates higher-order thinking. #motivationhandbook pic.twitter.com/WrYEh51uY2

Research (many references in book) shows extrinsic motivation tends to reduce long-term interest and effort in the topic at hand and reduce creativity. #motivationhandbook pic.twitter.com/Ut3CLqUi1J

Extensive research has found that providing students with choices promotes a sense of autonomy and intrinsic motivation, but choice must be connected to student interest. #motivationhandbook pic.twitter.com/JV5BdT1yY7

Student “voice” in supporting autonomy could mean that instead of students reacting to teacher choices, they can take a proactive role in determining what those choices are to begin with. #motivationhandbook pic.twitter.com/NriFjG7IHq

Competence is another critical element in supporting intrinsic motivation. It means feeling like you have the skills and abilities to successfully complete a task, especially if you think the task is not a particularly easy one. It’s also called self-efficacy #motivationhandbook. pic.twitter.com/QuX42vVtKC

A sense of competence can b supported through encouraging growth mindset https://t.co/5HHzUzJWhk ;by emphasizing “temporal comparisons, which r when students compare themselves 2 their past selves instead of to others & by using jigsaws https://t.co/ZQa2QtF4CS #motivationhandbook

Relatedness is critical 4 intrinsic motivation. Do students feel comfortable w/quality of their relationships at school, does their class work create situations where they connect w/ others w/whom they want 2 connect, & do they feel they belong to a community? #motivationhandbook pic.twitter.com/iXOTzt72Ce
— Larry Ferlazzo (@Larryferlazzo) April 2, 2023
Researchers have found that high-quality teacher-to-student relationships are critical for developing the conditions for intrinsic motivation to grow and for academic success. Is tchr empathic, respectful, kind, interested in student lives? #motivationhandbook pic.twitter.com/yrNZJ9EceN
— Larry Ferlazzo (@Larryferlazzo) April 2, 2023
Having positive teacher–student relationships does not mean we are friends. Instead, we are in a public adult/child relationship where we can be friendly (hat tip to @rickwormeli2 ). And concerned. And supportive. And “go the extra mile.” #motivationhandbook

Relevance promotes intrinsic motivation. Do students see what they r being taught as useful 2 them in their present lives &/or will it help them achieve their future goals? In addition, the word “relevance” can apply 2 topics or activities of “interest” 2 them #motivationhandbook pic.twitter.com/I3qfzf9NLq

“Self-generation” is the term used to describe having students themselves identify how what they are learning can be relevant to their lives and goals. Character Lab has excellent lesson plan to support this idea https://t.co/5SP4AFzOHZ #motivationhandbook
