Over the years, many teachers have told me they’ve found The Thematic Schedule I’m Using In My ELL Beginner’s Class very helpful.
I’ve used the same schedule for years, and it’s worked very well. Of course, though I might use the same thematic schedule, I often change the activities I use for each theme.
I recently realized that I hadn’t shared the schedule I use when I teach Intermediate ELLs. I emphasize writing, and focus on these essays and in this order:
Fable/Story
Autobiographical Incident Essay
Problem/Solution
Argument
Response to Literature
In both classes, I also use the National Geographic Edge curriculum, especially its Inside The USA handbook for Newcomers, and its grammar book for both levels (see THE THREE-LEGGED STRATEGY I’M USING TO TEACHING GRAMMAR IN MY ELL NEWCOMERS CLASS – HELP ME IMPROVE IT!).
I’m adding this post to THE BEST RESOURCES TO HELP EDUCATORS TEACH ELL NEWCOMERS.
