The Power of Small Acts of Inclusion is a useful short article in The Harvard Business Review, and offers several good specific suggestions for how organizations can promote an inclusive environment.
The problem with it, however, is that the authors market these nice ideas as a replacement of many DEI efforts, instead of a supplement to them.
Yes, some DEI efforts in schools and elsewhere haven’t worked very well, though many others have (see my previous post, Implicit Bias Training Doesn’t Seem To Work – So What Should Teachers & Others Do, Instead?).
I think teachers, district leaders, and principals could benefit from reading the HBR article thinking about implementing those ideas with staff and with students, along with the other ideas listed in my previous post.
But just focusing on the “micro-inclusion” ideas, though perhaps less “controversial” in some communities, is not going to effectively respond to the problems of racism and sexism.
