Adam Grant has a new TED Talk where he talks about the three elements he thinks are necessary to get into a state of “flow.”

His perspective makes sense to me as elements that could help you get there, though it seems to me you can achieve “flow” even if you don’t have any of the three and you are just extremely focused and motivated to do something (perhaps that’s what he means by “mindfulness”?)
