Cinco de Mayo, May 5th, commemorates the defeat of the French by the Mexican Army in 1862. It’s a holiday celebrated in parts of Mexico, and is celebrated by Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans in the United States.

Great site, Larry, but just one correction. 5 de mayo is *not* a national holiday in Mexico. It’s just not a big deal anywhere outside of the state of Puebla.
It’s only really celebrated in Puebla (where I live), where schools will be closed and there’s a military parade attended by the President. Most businesses here will stay open on the 5th.
In most of the rest of the country, life carries on regardless.
